ICONN08

Monday 25th - Friday 29th February

The International Conference of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICONN08) was held in Melbourne. Dr Kristin Alford and Dr Sarah Keenihan of Bridge8 assisted with the organisation of the student and teacher education days and a nano briefing for senior news editors and business leaders.

 

STAVCON2007

Thursday 22nd - Friday 23rd November

STAVCON, the annual conference of the Science Teachers' Association of Victoria, will be held at La Trobe University in Melbourne.  The theme for this year's conference is 'developing pathways'.  Dr Kristin Alford will present a session on using 'utility fog' as a device to think about the social impacts of nanotechnology in the future.  This will follow sessions by Francesca Calati and Dr Amanda Clarke on the SHINE program for nanotechnology.

 

BRIDGE8: A COOL COMPANY

Friday 21st September

Bridge8 has been named a ‘Top 50 Cool Company’ at the Australian Anthill Magazine 2007 Cool Company Awards.  Cool companies are creative, fun loving and commercially astute. Bridge8 joins a growing ‘alumni’ of cool companies, focused on innovation, entrepreneurship and business success through clever thinking.  Download the press release.

 

PRIME MINISTER'S PRIZES FOR SCIENCE

Wednesday 19th September

Mrs Francesca Calati was awarded the $50,000 Prime Minister's Prize for Excellence in Science Teaching in Secondary Schools.  The award recognises her outstanding chemistry teaching career and the innovative nanotechnology curriculum she developed with her team at St Helena.  She was nominated by Nanotechnology Victoria, Bridge8 and St Helena Secondary College.

 

COMS2007

Wednesday 5th September

Dr Kristin Alford presented "Ideas to Integration: An Innovative Approach to Nanotechnology Education" at COMS2007 in Melbourne, Australia.  Her presentation looked at the approach to the nanotechnology curriculum at St Helena Secondary College. 

 

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Wednesday 22nd August

Scientists from around South Australia were recognised at the South Australian Science Excellence Awards.  Lisa Bailey and the South Australian ASMR Committee were finalists in the Science Education and Communication Excellence category.  For more infoamrion on these awards, see our blog.

 

SCIENCE ALIVE during NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK

August 18th - 26th

For National Science Week, Lisa Bailey coordinated the Australian Society of Medical Research (ASMR) display at huge free science event “Science Alive!” at the Angus Stirling Hall, Wayville showgrounds, on August 11th and 12th from 10 am - 4 pm.  See Lisa's blog entry to see how it went.

 

NSTI NANOTECH 2007

Dr Kristin Alford presented a review of nanotechnology at St Helena Secondary College at the NSTI Nanotech 2007 Conference in Santa Clara, California, USA 20-24 April.  Download a copy of the paper.

 

VICTORIAN EDUCATION EXCELLENCE AWARDS

St Helena Secondary College was awarded the Curriculum Innovation Award at the Victorian Education Excellence Awards on Friday 11 May. Mrs Francesca Calati, Dr Amanda Clarke and the nanotechnology teaching team from were presented with the Award at a gala event hosted by the Department of Education.  The Curriculum Innovation Award recognizes innovative learning and teaching practice in schools. The Award provides $20,000 to cover costs associated with travel, accommodation, leave and any other support required to undertake, extend, consolidate or document the curriculum innovation.  St Helena intend to use this for the implementation of Teacher Professional Development in the nanotechnology curriculum.
