Utility Fog: The Impacts of Molecular Manufacturing on
Society
.jpg)
Nanotechnology is often hailed as the next
technology revolution, but will it have a dramatic effect on our future? This
workshop explores the implications of molecular manufacturing nanotechnologies
by examining
'utility fog', a mass of tiny foglets than can mainpuated to create and
manipulate objects. In the process, participants learn a framework for
considering the impact of new technologies in general. Components of this
workshop are being introduced as science elective as part of the curriculum in
senior secondary education in Victoria.
A workbook to guide workshop facilitation
is now available. The guidebook includes background information ot
nanotechnology and molecular manufacturing as well as the method for
considering the social implications of future nanotechnologies. Click here to
download the guidebook (PDF).
The foglet pictured was designed by Mark Seggie of Resin Design for
use in the workshop. Thanks also to Mark for designing the
workbook.
