reSkin Laboratory & WearNow Symposium

Kristin Alford attended the ANAT WearNow Symposium in Canberra on 2 & 3 February 2007. The WearNow Symposium explored emerging art, fashion and design practices in the field of wearable technologies.  The symposium commenced with a review of the wearable technology art developed by artists, jewellers and designers in the reSkin Laboratory.  The special wearables edition of Filter magazine was launched, featuring a profile of an upcoming Bridge8 project ‘Weaving with Light: Advanced Technologies in Social Enterprise’.

Pictured are works by Leah Heiss, Jonathan Duckworth and Elliat Rich.

On Saturday, participants discussed the history, innovation and future development of wearable technologies.  Speakers included international guests such as Joanna Berzowska (Canada), Elise Co (USA) and Sarah Kettley (UK), and prominent Australians in the field such as Stephen Barrass, Alistair Riddell, Robin Cranston, Cinnamon Lee, Oron Catts, Susan Cohn and the label ‘High Tea with Mrs. Woo’.

reSkin was a collaborative project of the Australian Network for Art & Technology (ANAT), the Australian National University School of Art, the Centre for New Media Arts (CNMA) and Craft Australia.  Six international and national facilitators working with twenty one participants will make for interesting synergies and potential collaborations. The day to day activities of the laboratory were recorded via the regularly updated reSkin blog.
