PODCASTS:

Kristin Alford was interviewed on the Einstien a Go Go
program on Triple R Radio In Melbourne. She spoke about the recent
AZoNano & NanoVic podcast on health, safety and the environment, Weaving with Light and the NanoVic Art Prizes. A podcast of the
interview is available (Start at 11:00 mins).
AZoNano and Nanotechnology Victoria have joined to produce podcasts for
the general public explainaing various aspects of nanotechnology.
t Kristin
is featured on the AZoNano & NanoVic Podcast, Nanotech - A Review with an Australian
Perspective, September 2006.
This initial Podcast provides a short history of the development of
nanotechnology and interviews several key players from within the nanotech
industry, research community and government to draw out their current views on
the likely impact nanotechnology will have on healthcare, materials and the
environment. It provides an overview of nanotechnology and includes interviews with
the following key players:
- Gavin Rezos – Former Managing Director and now Consultant to pSivida on the use of
BioSilion in the targeted delivery of drugs for the treatment of cancer.
- Dr Jackie Fairley – CEO, Starpharma, a leading NanoBiotech company at the forefront
of the use of dendrimer technology for the treatment of HIV and genital
herpes.
- Dr Sarah Morgan – Project Manager - Delivery & Sensing at Nanotechnology Victoria
Ltd. Sarah leads commercial projects in the development and testing of
analytical and delivery devices, with a focus on water analysis and
environmental applications.
- Dr
Terry Turney – Director of the CSIRO Nanotechnology Centre. Terry is at
the forefront of Australian Government initiatives relating to the
commercialisation of Nanotech products.
- Professor Frank Caruso - Professor and Federation Fellow
in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University
of Melbourne. A leading researcher in the development of “bottom up”
nanotechnology as applied to Polymeric layers.
- Dr Kristin Alford, currently the Marketing Director at Nanotechnology
Victoria. Kristin is also the Director of Bridge8 Pty Ltd which she established in 2002 to
consult to a range of organisations on foresight, strategy and planning.
t Kristin Alford coordinated the
second podcast
in the series, The Implications for Health, Safety and the Environment of the
Nanotech Revolution, which was released in February 2007. This
podcast gathers the opinions of key stakeholders with interests in the health,
safety and environmental impacts of nanotechnology. It asks: are there
risks associated with some nanotechnologies? Is it ethical to proceed
with some areas of nanotechnology and what are the implications with a
technology that may profoundly change human life? It features interviews with a number of key
stakeholders including:
- Georgia Miller, Friends of the Earth
spokesperson on nanotechnology, on the risks and concerns for the
consumer;
- Steve Mullins, Health and Safety Officer for the ACTU and participant in the
Standards Australia taskforce on nanotechnology, speaking about the
importance of worker health considerations;
- Angus Robinson, National Business Development Manager, CGU (IAG) on
the risk management issues associated with nanotechnology;
- Dr Rob Sparrow, lecturer and ethicist with the Centre for Human Bioethics at Monash University addressing
issues of access and public involvement in decision-making;
- Assoc Prof Paul Wright, toxicologist at RMIT University and coordinator of
NanoSafe Australia, providing details on issues associated with the
understanding of nano-toxicity.
